Knife-wielding Robbers Convicted of Murdering Kalabe Legesse for His Mobile Phone in Peckham Rye Park

LONDON, UK – A University graduate, Kalabe Legesse, was brutally stabbed to death in Peckham Rye on December 30, 2022. Two individuals, Nah’shun Thomas, 20, and a 17-year-old boy, have been convicted of his murder, facing life sentences.

The two robbers cycled around Southwark looking for people to mug, carrying out two phone robberies before targeting Legesse as he sat on a bench in Peckham Rye Park. According to reports, the killers asked the victim where he was from and what he had on him, before threatening and ultimately stabbing him in the heart.

Despite the efforts of police officers and medics, Legesse succumbed to his injuries and died on the park bench. Following extensive investigation by the Metropolitan Police, the two perpetrators were found with incriminating evidence linking them to the crime, including a hunting knife with traces of Legesse’s blood.

The pair denied the charges but were convicted of murder by a jury. They had also admitted to two counts of robbery in relation to the earlier phone muggings that same evening. Both have been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing at Croydon Crown Court on April 19.

Legesse’s family expressed their grief and gratitude to the investigation team for their hard work in bringing the perpetrators to justice. The police described the attack as “brutal and senseless” and stated that justice had been served for Legesse’s family.

The tragic death of Kalabe Legesse serves as a reminder of the pervasive threat of violent crime in the community and the devastating impact it has on families. As the perpetrators face the consequences of their actions, the community will continue to mourn the loss of a promising young individual. The pursuit of justice for victims like Legesse is critical in ensuring the safety and well-being of all members of society.
