Killeen Veteran Shares Harrowing Tale of Combat Missions in Iraq

KILLEEN, Texas – Rod Ford, a former soldier from Fort Cavazos, served two combat missions in Iraq, and it was the second deployment that left him wounded, ultimately ending his military career. Now a Killeen resident, he vividly recounts the unforgettable day during an 18-month deployment from 2005-2007. Despite the challenges and injuries he faced, he still cherishes his time in the military.

During his second deployment, Ford was part of a quick response force (QRF) when he suffered a injury that would lead to him being medically discharged in November 2011. Although his military career was cut short, he views his time in the military as an eye-opening experience, exposing him to various cultures and people from different backgrounds. His initial training in basic training was a new and challenging experience, but it taught him valuable life skills and changed his perspective on the world.

After being wounded, watching his colleagues continue normal duties while he was unable to do the same took a toll on Ford, ultimately leading to his decision to leave the military. He went on to earn an associate degree in general studies from Central Texas College and is now a bartender and freelance photographer, serving as a sergeant-at-arms for the Military Order of the Purple Heart chapter 1876 and president of the Purple Heart Riders motorcycle association.

Despite the challenges and the tragic events that unfolded during his time in Iraq, Ford says he has many good memories from his time in the military. As a single father of three, he hopes to inspire others to consider joining the military for the valuable lessons it can teach in discipline and exposure to diverse perspectives.

Ford’s experiences are a reminder of the sacrifices many military personnel make during their service, and the challenges they may face upon returning to civilian life. His story sheds light on the physical and mental toll that combat deployments can take on individuals and their families. Ford’s journey serves as a tribute to the resilience and courage of those who have served in the military, and the ongoing support they may need as they transition back to civilian life.

In his own words, Ford recommends military service to others, recognizing the valuable lessons and structure it can provide. Despite the hardships he faced, Ford is grateful for the experiences and opportunities he had as a soldier. His story highlights the enduring impact of military service and the valuable contributions of veterans to their communities.
