Kent, WA — A 26-year-old man has been taken into custody, following a harrowing incident on Sunday morning where a woman was violently sexually assaulted in Kent. The arrest, which took place near the Kent Transit Center on Tuesday, concluded a tense two-day search by local police.
The ordeal began around 9:20 a.m. on Sunday when local patrol officers were called to an assault near 1000 Central Avenue North. A 29-year-old woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, suffered a brutal attack by an assailant. She was assaulted from behind, dragged into a clump of bushes and violently attacked, according to the Kent Police Department (KPD).
Investigators reported that during the assault, the woman was strangled until she lost consciousness. Upon regaining awareness, she found herself being sexually assaulted. Despite her dire circumstances, she managed to fight off her attacker and escaped to safety.
The victim was subsequently rushed to Harborview Medical Center, where she received medical treatment for her injuries and trauma. In response to this vicious attack, detectives from the Major Crimes Unit, the Homicide and Violent Crimes Unit, and the Special Assault Unit launched a full-scale investigation.
Efforts to apprehend the suspect included extensive canvassing of the area and checking for available surveillance video footage from nearby buildings. These efforts bore fruit when authorities successfully retrieved clear images of the suspect, accelerating the manhunt.
The breakthrough occurred on Tuesday when patrol officers, who had been given the suspect’s description and images, spotted him near the transit center. Notably, the suspect was apprehended while still clad in the same clothing he had worn during the attack, which strengthened the case against him.
Upon his arrest, detectives conducted an in-depth interview with the suspect. During this session, the suspect provided a full post-Miranda confession, affirming his role in the assault.
