Kansas Deputy’s Remarkable Work Leads to Arrest of Child Predator After 20 Victims Identified on Snapchat

TOPEKA, Kansas — A Wabaunsee County sheriff’s deputy, Cpl. Jon Sumner, has been commended for uncovering a child sex predator after an Alma girl was solicited for sex on Snapchat. Sumner’s investigation led to the discovery that the man had been harassing dozens of underage girls, including one he was eventually convicted of raping.

In November 2022, Sumner met with a local couple whose daughter had been solicited online by a child predator, sparking his investigation. He started looking into 25-year-old Miles McGough and eventually found evidence of his crimes against children on Snapchat, identifying more than 20 other child victims. McGough was receiving and transmitting child pornography, as well as sending obscene photos of himself to children.

Sumner’s efforts led to the identification of McGough from Castlerock, Co. This information was forwarded to the Castlerock Colorado Police Department, leading to the revelation that there were an additional 24 underage girls tied to the case, uncovered by the Colorado Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) team.

The investigation revealed that McGough had traveled to Florida to meet an underage girl who he had been grooming online for months. He was arrested in March 2023 in Douglas County, Colorado, and later sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison for enticing a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity. McGough also received 15 years of supervised release after his prison term ends and was ordered to pay a $25,000 fine.

Law enforcement in Colorado is still waiting for sentencing on 22 felony sex crimes. If convicted, McGough could potentially face an additional 15-20 years in Colorado State Prison after serving his federal sentence.
