MIDDLESBROUGH, England — A 38-year-old man was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for a series of brutal assaults and controlling behavior against a woman, culminating in a campaign of physical, emotional, and verbal abuse. Danna Ali was convicted of charges including actual bodily harm, stalking involving fear of violence, and dangerous driving after a protracted investigation into his actions.
The case came to light in June 2022 when police responded to a 999 call from the victim’s mother, who reported that Ali was attempting to force his way into their home while making violent threats. This incident marked the beginning of police engagement with a man described as a “persistent and violent perpetrator” by law enforcement officials.
Throughout their relationship, Ali orchestrated a reign of terror, marked by extreme aggression and manipulation. In December 2022, a heated argument in a hotel room escalated into a physical assault, during which the woman was violently dragged and thrown around. Following this attack, she was left to clean up blood from the walls while Ali destroyed property, adding to the trauma experienced.
Investigations revealed a pattern of harassment, including attempts to break into her home and threats of further violence. Ali even went so far as to destroy her phone in attempts to prevent her from documenting her injuries. These incidents only grew more alarming, with reports of him trying to forcefully hold her head underwater in the bath.
After being arrested in June 2023, Ali was initially remanded but was later released on bail, allowing him to continue his abusive behavior. Despite being under supervision, he managed to assault the victim again, damaging her property and injuring her when she sought to leave his residence. His repeated violations of the law led to an extensive appeal by law enforcement, urging the public to assist in locating him after he discarded his electronic monitoring device.
Weeks later, Ali confronted the victim in a series of driving incidents where he threatened her life while behind the wheel. Promising that he would change, he still resorted to violence, attacking her in full view of the street in April 2024. His brutal methods included ripping her hair out and leaving her injured on the roadside, further escalating the fear and trauma inflicted on her.
Cleveland Police eventually rearrested Ali in November 2024 after he inundated the victim with relentless messages and phone calls, continuing his harassment despite prior legal consequences. His return to custody led to additional charges as he faced the repercussions of his actions.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Jarrett highlighted the bravery of the victim in coming forward, stating that the lengthy investigation unveiled the severity of Ali’s abusive behavior. The official expressed hope that the outcome would offer some relief to the victim as she works to reclaim her life and secure a future free from fear.
