Bonner, Australia — A peaceful morning jog turned into a harrowing experience for a 59-year-old woman on a well-frequented scenic trail on Monday. The incident, which occurred around 10:15 a.m. on the Centenary Trail, involved the woman being attacked from behind allegedly by a teenage boy.
The woman was running on the Oak Hill segment of the trail, a 138-kilometer path that offers a mix of urban and rural landscapes along the New South Wales border. According to the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Police, the maniac act not only left her unconscious for a brief period but also resulted in physical injuries when she attempted to escape.
Upon regaining consciousness, the woman was struck in the head as she tried to flee, leading to a fall on the ground where the assault continued. Police reported that the assailant then stole her mobile phone before fleeing the scene. After the attack, the woman was able to run along the trail, where she encountered another jogger who assisted her in calling emergency services.
Authorities responded swiftly, and paramedics transported the injured woman to Canberra Hospital for treatment of her minor injuries. In the wake of this traumatic event, police were able to apprehend a 15-year-old boy shortly after the attack. The suspect now faces multiple charges, including indecent assault, actual bodily harm, choking with the intent of incapacitation, and robbery.
Following the arrest, the minor was subject to a mental health assessment and is presently in police custody. He appeared in the ACT Children’s Court, where he is scheduled to appear again later this month.
This incident has raised concerns about safety along the trail, a popular route for walkers and cyclists alike. Local authorities emphasize the importance of remaining vigilant while in public spaces and are urging anyone with further information about the event to come forward. As the community grapples with the aftermath, discussions surrounding safety protocols and heightened patrols on local trails are anticipated.
