Investigation into Clinton Township Vape Supply Facility Fire Delayed until April amid Coordination Challenges and Safety Concerns

In Clinton Township, Michigan, an investigation into a fire and series of explosions at a vape supply facility is set to begin in the first week of April. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will lead the public investigation, with support from local authorities and other agencies. The Clinton Township Fire Chief, Tim Duncan, mentioned that the process is expected to be slow and complex, especially with the involvement of private parties such as the building’s owners and insurers.

The incident, which occurred at a facility identified as Select Distributors and Goo Smoke Shop on 15 Mile Road, resulted in debris being scattered as far as two miles away. Tragically, a 19-year-old individual lost their life, and a firefighter sustained minor injuries from the explosions. The site had recently cooled down, allowing investigators to approach it briefly for an initial assessment.

Moving forward, investigators will need to use heavy equipment to navigate through the debris and structural pieces at the scene. Specialists from various fields, including mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and fire suppression experts, will be brought in for a comprehensive investigation. The anticipated start date for the detailed probe is the first week of April, with hopes of determining the cause of the explosion within a couple of days.

Despite the controlled scene, authorities advise the public to stay away from the area and report any findings to law enforcement. The presence of containers, some of which may still be full, poses risks to the public safety. The investigation will delve into the intense heat present at the scene, which adds complexity to the process. With multiple agencies and experts involved, the investigation aims to provide clarity on the events leading to the fire and explosions.
