The children’s mother, identified by family as Jasmyne Garcia, died after being brought to a San Jose hospital Saturday.
MORGAN HILL, Calif. — Three children are in the care of Santa Clara County officials after their mother was killed and their father was arrested on suspicion of murder following a weekend homicide that police believe occurred at the family’s Morgan Hill home.
The children, ages 14, 6 and 3, were found when officers went to a residence in the 1100 block of Vintage Lane on Saturday, according to Morgan Hill police. Officers safely removed them from the home, took them to the police department and later released them into the custody of the Santa Clara County Department of Family and Children’s Services.
Their mother has been identified by her family as 34-year-old Jasmyne Garcia. Police say her husband, 37-year-old Roy Anthony Lopez, arrived at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose at about 9:20 a.m. Oct. 3 and reported that he had killed his wife. First responders then found Garcia critically injured inside a vehicle parked at the hospital.
Emergency personnel treated Garcia, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. San Jose police detained Lopez without incident until Morgan Hill officers arrived. He was taken to Morgan Hill for questioning and later booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of murder.
Investigators traced the suspected homicide back to the Vintage Lane home. Police have not released a suspected motive or publicly detailed what happened inside the residence. They also have not announced the official cause and manner of Garcia’s death. NBC Bay Area reported that police said a firearm was not used.
The presence of the three children has become a significant part of the investigation and its aftermath. Morgan Hill police told NBC Bay Area that investigators believe the children may have been present during the violence. Authorities have not publicly detailed what the children saw or heard, and officials have not released their names.
Garcia’s relatives publicly identified her after authorities initially described the victim only as an adult woman. A fundraiser organized for her children says Garcia was born and raised in Salinas and remembered her as a woman whose faith and family were central to her life. The campaign was created to help support the children following their mother’s death.
Police have not said whether Lopez has made additional statements since being taken into custody or whether prosecutors have filed formal charges beyond his booking on suspicion of murder. The publicly released information remains part of an active investigation, and the allegations against Lopez have not been proven in court.
Authorities also have not disclosed whether the children will remain in county custody or what longer-term arrangements may be made for them. Those decisions are handled separately from the criminal investigation and involve the county agency responsible for their care.
Morgan Hill police continued investigating Garcia’s death Wednesday. No motive had been announced, and authorities had not released further details about the cause of her fatal injuries or the events inside the Vintage Lane home.
