High School Student Charged with Murder in Fatal Shooting Case, Sparking Community Outcry

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – An 18-year-old high school student from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, has been charged with murder in connection to the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Timothy Emmanuel Jones in December. According to court documents, Harvey Barnes III, an 11th-grade student at Largo High School, has been charged with first- and second-degree murder and other related counts.

The shooting took place on December 28 in the 900 block of St. Michaels Drive in Bowie, Maryland. Police responded to the scene and found Jones with gunshot wounds inside a car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Initial investigations suggest that a dispute between Barnes and Jones led to the fatal shooting. The two had mutual acquaintances, according to the police.

Surveillance video from the surrounding area showed Jones being chased out of a house by Barnes, who then fatally shot Jones. The video also captured an exchange between the two before the shooting occurred. Barnes has been ordered held without bond as he awaits trial.

In response to the tragic incident, Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy emphasized the need to address youth violence and prevent fatal shootings. She highlighted the importance of holding juveniles accountable for violent crimes. However, efforts to reach the families of Barnes and Jones for comment were unsuccessful.

As the case unfolds, counselors at Largo High School are available to support staff members and students. The school district has deferred any further comment to the police department. It is not immediately clear whether Barnes has legal representation at this time.

This case serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of violent crimes involving young individuals and highlights the importance of addressing youth violence in the community.
