NEW ORLEANS, LA – A well-known gospel singer and educator from New Orleans faces serious allegations, including sex trafficking and rape, involving a minor. The New Orleans Police Department is actively seeking information from potential additional victims.
Josh Kagler, an acclaimed gospel performer and choir director, was recently arrested following his performance at Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s inauguration. According to police reports, the charges stem from a complaint by the mother of a 16-year-old boy who discovered disturbing text messages on her son’s phone. The messages were described as being of a sexual nature.
The teenager informed investigators that a teacher from Warren Easton Charter High School, identified as Kagler, had approached him. The boy claimed that Kagler invited him to his home, offering him marijuana. Allegedly, Kagler began paying the boy for sexual activities, escalating to physical contact, which the teenager resisted.
Authorities report that the incidents occurred at Kagler’s residence, with Kagler either personally transporting the boy or arranging rideshare services. They allege that Kagler used money to entice the boy into performing sexual acts.
Warren Easton Charter High School confirmed Kagler’s employment during the 2024-2025 school year but stated he is no longer with the institution. The school emphasized its cooperation with law enforcement and reiterated its commitment to student safety.
Kagler’s teaching history includes positions at George Washington Carver and McDonogh 35 schools. He is also known for his performances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and contributions to a Grammy Award-winning gospel album.
The NOPD has urged any other potential victims to come forward, assuring them of their safety and privacy. Kagler faces multiple charges, including trafficking minors for sexual purposes, indecent behavior with juveniles, third-degree rape, and sexual battery.
Currently held at the Orleans Justice Center, Kagler was denied bond at a recent magistrate hearing, pending further legal proceedings.
