KANSAS CITY, MO – Two juveniles have been charged in connection with the shooting that occurred at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl victory parade on Wednesday. Upon being charged, the juveniles were detained in secure detention at the Juvenile Detention Center on gun-related and resisting arrest charges, according to the Jackson County Family Court Division. It is anticipated that additional charges may be brought forward as the investigation by the Kansas City Police Department continues. So far, the suspects’ names have not been released.
Of the 22 individuals who sustained gunshot injuries during the shooting, more than half of the victims are under the age of 16. The victims ranged in age from eight to 47 years old. Elizabeth Lopez-Galvan, a local DJ and mother-of-two, has been identified as the deceased. In response to the tragic event, a GoFundMe started by the family of Ms. Lopez-Galvan has raised over $190,000, with notable contributions from Taylor Swift.
Swift, who attended the Super Bowl to support her boyfriend and Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce, donated $100,000 to the family’s fundraiser, along with a heartfelt message expressing her deepest sympathies and condolences. In addition, Children’s Mercy Hospital announced that all 12 shooting patients have been released, although a patient at another hospital remains in critical condition.
The Missouri shooting marks the 48th mass shooting in 2023, according to the Gun Violence Archive. Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves indicated that half of the shooting victims are children, while one victim – a 43-year-old mother-of-two – tragically lost her life. Investigation findings suggest the shooting may have stemmed from a dispute between people and was not terrorism-related, as firearms were also recovered from the scene.
