Shortly after the horrific attack, the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIS-K) claimed responsibility through a statement released by their affiliated news agency Amaq on the messaging platform Telegram. ISIS-K, a branch of the transnational terror group Islamic State (IS), is notorious for its lethal operations in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and beyond, with a history of thousands of casualties in attacks dating back to 2015.
Formed in 2014 by defected Taliban and al-Qaeda members in Pakistan and Afghanistan, ISIS-K emerged as a more radical faction advocating a violent interpretation of jihadism. The group officially aligned itself with ISIS in the Khorasan region in 2015, sharing the goal of establishing a transnational caliphate governed by their extreme interpretation of Islam.
