Guilty Verdict Handed Down in Trial of Chicago Cop’s Murder – Reaction Pouring In

Chicago, Illinois – Emonte Morgan has been found guilty of the murder of Chicago Police Officer Ella French in August 2021. The jury deliberated for just over three hours before reaching a guilty verdict on Tuesday night. The trial was emotional for French’s family, who embraced each other with tears upon hearing the verdict.

In addition to the first-degree murder charge for Officer French’s death, Morgan, 23, was also found guilty of attempted first-degree murder in the case of Officer Carlos Yanez and a third police officer, Joshua Blas. The jury deliberated for several hours before announcing their verdict, which was met with a full courtroom, including Cook County Sheriff’s deputies and Chicago police officers.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx expressed gratitude for the jury’s verdict while acknowledging the tragic loss of a Chicago police officer. The president of the police union, John Catanzara, also commended the jury for seeing through the defense’s allegations. French’s former commander, 8th District Commander Bryan Spreyne, described the trial as a trying week for the families involved and the city of Chicago.

The fatal shooting of Officer French occurred during a traffic stop in West Englewood in August 2021. Emonte Morgan faced 85 charges, including attempted first-degree murder of Officer Yanez and Officer Blas. The incident left Officer French dead and Officer Yanez paralyzed, with Morgan’s brother pleading guilty to related charges in court.

As the trial unfolded, graphic police bodycam videos were presented, revealing the intense moments leading up to the shooting. Witnesses, including Officer Yanez, detailed the events of that fateful day, highlighting the physical and emotional impact of the shooting. Despite the defense’s claims, the jury ultimately found Morgan guilty on all charges.

Two years after her death, Chicago continues to honor Officer French’s memory. A memorial roll call was held on the anniversary of her death, and Mayor Brandon Johnson paid tribute to her dedication and sacrifice. The Chicago Police Department also named a new horse after Officer French as a tradition to honor fallen officers.

The sentencing for Emonte Morgan has yet to be scheduled, but a date for post-trial motions has been set. The trial has shed light on the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the lasting impact of senseless acts of violence. French’s legacy will continue to be remembered and honored by the Chicago community.
