Guests and Employees Evacuated After Over-Pressurization Incident at Tulsa Hotel

TULSA, Okla. — Around 50 guests and employees of a hotel near 31st and Memorial were evacuated and then allowed back in after a possible over-pressurization in the pool room led to an explosion, according to the Tulsa Fire Department.

Two hazmat trucks were on the scene of the Embassy Suites, near 31st and Memorial, as first responders worked to address the situation.

TFD Captain Tim Halowell stated that an over-pressurization of a chemical container in the pool room caused the incident. One person drove themselves to urgent care for injuries, while two others were transported to the hospital. Three other individuals chose not to go to the hospital.

The captain indicated that despite the seriousness of the situation, the explosion occurred on the exterior of the building, minimizing the potential damage.

Additionally, there is no detection of chlorine in the building at this time, but the odor of chlorine remains on the first floor. According to first responders, this lingering odor is not a cause for concern.

According to the CDC, chlorine exposure may cause symptoms such as burning of the eyes, nose, and throat, coughing, and difficulty breathing.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with chemical over-pressurization in public spaces, and the importance of prompt and effective emergency response measures.
