Grimsby Man Sentenced to Four Years for Brutal Domestic Violence and Strangulation of Partner

Grimsby, England — A man has been sentenced to four years in prison following a series of violent incidents against his partner, culminating in a brutal attack where he strangled her. Michael Carlisle, 41, pleaded guilty to charges of strangulation and coercive behavior during a hearing at Grimsby Crown Court.

The court learned that the couple’s relationship, which had initially offered comfort to the victim, deteriorated after six months. Prosecutor Hannah Turner detailed a pattern of violence that unfolded over various incidents, including one where Carlisle smashed his partner’s head against a television screen and another where he violently pushed her into a mirror, shattering it. The couple’s relationship had begun in the workplace, but it soon turned into a cycle of aggression.

Evidence presented by Turner illustrated the severity of the abuse, with the woman suffering numerous injuries over the course of the relationship. Pictures depicting her bruises and a compiled list of incidents provided a grim account of the domestic violence she endured. In one particularly alarming episode, he restrained her on the ground, kicking and punching her, before smashing her head against a television.

The situation escalated on July 5, when the couple returned home after a trip to a local pub. Following an accusation of infidelity, Carlisle attacked her, wrapping his hands around her throat and repeatedly thrusting her against a mirror. The woman managed to escape to a bedroom, barricading herself before fleeing to a nearby shop and calling for help. In her distress, Carlisle attempted to seize her phone, but she successfully escaped and reached out to police.

Carlisle was apprehended by officers who found cannabis at his residence during the arrest. His extensive criminal history, which includes 29 convictions for 83 offenses—14 of which involved violence—was highlighted during the proceedings. Defense attorney Craig Lowe presented a letter from the defendant expressing remorse for his actions, stating that Carlisle has been working on addressing his issues with alcohol and drugs.

A victim impact statement revealed the emotional toll the abusive relationship took on the woman. She expressed her love for Carlisle, stating that he oscillated between tenderness and cruelty, leaving her feeling trapped. The judge, Gurdial Singh, not only handed down a substantial prison sentence but also imposed a ten-year restraining order, preventing Carlisle from contacting his former partner either directly or indirectly.

This case underscores the ongoing issue of domestic violence, reflecting the challenges faced by victims in escaping abusive relationships. Activists and support groups continue to advocate for greater awareness and resources to help those trapped in cycles of violence.
