Girl, 15, Escapes Basement Before Baltimore Stabbing Arrest

Police have arrested a 23-year-old man, but major questions remain about the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s account.

BALTIMORE — A 15-year-old girl who was found stabbed in northwest Baltimore told police she had escaped from a nearby basement, an account that has become a central unanswered element of a case that now includes an arrest and kidnapping charges.

The teenager is expected to survive, authorities said. Police arrested 23-year-old Abubakarr Barrie on Friday in the 3700 block of Garrison Boulevard after detectives investigated the stabbing reported the previous night on Belle Avenue. Court records show Barrie faces attempted murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment and assault charges.

The case began around 9:30 p.m. Thursday when officers were sent to the 3800 block of Belle Avenue for a reported stabbing. Police found the girl receiving medical care for a stab wound. She told officers that she had escaped from a basement somewhere in the area and had been stabbed by an unknown man.

Police said Friday that the girl was sedated and expected to survive. Authorities have not released her name or provided further public details about her condition. Because she is a minor and officials have disclosed limited information, details that could identify her have not been reported.

Several major questions about the incident remain unanswered. Police have not publicly identified the basement the girl described, explained how she came to be there or said how long she may have been inside. Authorities also have not disclosed whether investigators believe the stabbing occurred in the basement, outside it or elsewhere.

Investigators initially said they were looking into the teenager’s report that an unknown man had stabbed her. The next major development came Friday, when detectives arrested Barrie. Police have not publicly described the evidence used to identify him or explained whether Barrie and the girl knew each other before the incident.

The charges listed in court records add a new dimension to the investigation. In addition to first- and second-degree attempted murder, Barrie faces kidnapping, false imprisonment and multiple assault charges. Officials have not publicly detailed the specific conduct alleged to support each charge.

The charges remain accusations. Barrie has not been convicted in connection with the stabbing, and the publicly available information does not resolve how prosecutors will present the sequence of events or what evidence investigators have collected.

Police have also not announced a motive. The teenager’s account of escaping from a basement remains one of the most significant pieces of publicly released information, but authorities have provided little additional context while the criminal case moves forward.

Barrie was scheduled for a bail review Monday morning. Further details could emerge through the court process as investigators continue examining what happened before the girl was found injured on Belle Avenue.
