Gas Plant Explodes in Nairobi, Leaving Many Feared Dead and Injured

NAIROBI, Kenya – A gas plant explosion in Mradi village, Embakasi, Nairobi, has resulted in multiple casualties and life-threatening injuries, plunging the city into a state of panic.

Eyewitnesses reported huge flames and billowing smoke, with people screaming and running for safety in fear of additional explosions. The explosion, which occurred just minutes before midnight, caused a power outage in the area.

As emergency services, including firefighters, were yet to arrive at the scene two hours after the explosion, neighboring buildings became engulfed in flames, leading to the evacuation of approximately 100 households in Mradi village.

Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura confirmed that the explosion took place at a gas refilling plant, causing several injuries and significant damage to the building. The exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed, and rescue operations are ongoing.

Panic has gripped the area, prompting the public to avoid the vicinity while rescue operations are underway. A multi-agency fire brigade, including Nairobi City County, the National Police, and the Kenya Red Cross, is working to combat the fire.

The explosion has sparked concerns about safety measures and regulations surrounding gas plants and prompted discussions about emergency response protocols in the event of similar incidents in the future. The situation remains dire as authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage and attend to the injured.
