Police say the 7-month-old died 49 days after arriving at UC Davis Medical Center.
GALT, Calif. — A Sacramento County father was arrested Tuesday morning on suspicion of homicide and felony child abuse after his 7-month-old daughter died nearly two months after she was hospitalized with severe head injuries, the Galt Police Department said.
The arrest of 33-year-old Edgar Allan Bonifacio marks a new phase in an investigation that began in August, when hospital staff reported suspected abuse for an infant brought in unresponsive with head trauma. Detectives say medical findings developed since then did not match the father’s account of how the baby was hurt. Bonifacio was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail as the case moves from a long inquiry into potential criminal charges and court review.
Officers said UC Davis Medical Center notified Galt police in late summer after the child was admitted with life-threatening injuries. When investigators met the parents at the hospital, Bonifacio told officers he had been alone at home with his daughter when she slipped from his arms, fell backward onto the floor and stopped responding. The child remained hospitalized for 49 days and died while under medical care, according to police. Detectives said subsequent medical assessments indicated the injuries were inconsistent with the scenario provided by the father. “The Galt Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the child’s family and loved ones as they mourn this tragic and heartbreaking loss,” the agency said in a statement. Officers took Bonifacio into custody at 6:55 a.m. Tuesday.
Authorities identified the father as a Galt resident and said he faces suspicion of homicide and felony child abuse resulting in death. The department did not release additional details about the exact nature of the injuries or the precise date of death, noting those specifics will be part of the case file and forthcoming court records. The infant’s relatives identified her as Natalia Cruz Felix in a statement shared with reporters. The family, who said they are grieving an “unimaginable loss,” asked for privacy as the legal process begins. Hospital officials declined to discuss patient details, citing privacy rules. Jail booking information was not immediately available regarding bail or an initial court date.
Galt, a city of about 26,000 people south of Sacramento, is policed by a department that routinely coordinates with county child welfare workers and prosecutors on complex abuse investigations. In many child death cases, detectives rely on pediatric specialists to analyze injuries and timelines before recommending charges. Police said that happened here, stretching the inquiry across several weeks while the infant remained hospitalized. The department said the medical findings ultimately led detectives to seek the arrest. Prior incidents involving the child or family were not immediately disclosed.
Investigators said they would forward their reports to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office for charging review. If prosecutors file a homicide count and child abuse resulting in death, the father would be scheduled to appear in Sacramento Superior Court, where a judge could consider custody status and set future dates. Police said additional information, including autopsy findings and more precise timing, could be released in a court filing or at a later briefing. The department did not announce a news conference but said updates would be provided as the case advances.
Outside the small police station on Tuesday, neighbors described a stunned community processing the news. A woman who lives nearby said parents at a local park were quiet during the morning rush, glancing at their phones for updates. At UC Davis Medical Center, where the infant spent weeks in care, a nurse who was not authorized to speak publicly said staff members were “heartbroken,” adding that long hospital stays in pediatric cases can involve many teams and hard conversations. The family’s statement called the child “our beautiful daughter Natalia” and thanked people for compassion while they mourn.
As of Tuesday evening, the father remained in county custody while detectives finalized reports for prosecutors. Officials said the next milestone will be a charging decision and, if filed, an initial court appearance later this week.
