Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Authorities are investigating a double homicide in Fort Lauderdale that may be connected to a separate shooting spree just hours later in Sarasota, where five additional victims, including the alleged shooter, were found dead.
Detectives from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office are piecing together details of the incidents, which appear linked to a suspect with a romantic relationship to one of the victims in Fort Lauderdale. However, officials have not disclosed the suspect’s possible motives for targeting the individuals in Sarasota, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
Fort Lauderdale police received a call for a welfare check on Tuesday, leading them to a residence where the two victims were discovered. Detective Kerri Hagerty noted there is no ongoing threat to the community, emphasizing that initial assessments suggest the incident was isolated.
The chilling sequence of events unfolded when Sarasota deputies were dispatched to a gated community after a 911 call reported gunfire. Upon arrival, they found a man critically injured in the front yard; he later succumbed to his injuries. Inside the house, they discovered the bodies of four others, including the suspect.
Further investigation revealed that detectives in Fort Lauderdale had established a connection between the cases. They provided Sarasota authorities with information about the suspect’s vehicle, which was located in the vicinity of the Sarasota shooting. Surveillance footage from residents and the homeowners’ association recorded the vehicle entering the neighborhood shortly before the sounds of gunfire erupted.
About thirty minutes later, the injured man was seen on video arriving in the neighborhood, approaching the property in question, before being shot. Remarkably, no additional individuals were captured on the footage near the residence before law enforcement arrived.
