WASHINGTON, MD – Former US Capitol police officer Harry Dunn, who experienced the chaos and violence during the January 6 attack on the Capitol, has now decided to run for Congress representing a district in Maryland. The attack, which left Dunn and his fellow officers physically and emotionally scarred, has fueled his commitment to ensure the strength of democracy.
Dunn describes the horrific scene that unfolded on that fateful day, recalling the profane mix of sweat, screams, and violence that filled the Capitol grounds, a place he had vowed to protect. He details the hand-to-hand fighting with rioters and the racial epithets hurled at him and other Black officers as they battled the attackers.
Following the attack, Dunn has been disheartened by the growing support for former President Donald Trump, who instigated the violence that day. He finds it appalling that some of the attackers have declared their intention to run for office, emphasizing the need for leaders who prioritize democratic institutions.
The former officer emphasizes the importance of transparency, accountability, and a commitment to upholding the values that make the nation strong. Reflecting on the urgency of the upcoming election, Dunn stresses the need to learn from the past and actively work to strengthen democratic foundations.
