Foreign Students Attacked and Assaulted During Ramadan Prayers at Gujarat University

Ahmedabad, India – Foreign students at Gujarat University in Ahmedabad faced a troubling incident during their evening Ramadan prayers on Saturday when unidentified assailants attacked them. The assailants not only assaulted the students but also caused damage to hostel rooms, throwing stones and shouting slogans.

The assault occurred within the Block A hostel premises, with some students claiming that individuals from the Block B hostel prevented them from practicing their Ramadan prayers within the hostel area.

Following the attack, injured students were admitted to SVP Hospital in Ahmedabad, where they are reported to be in stable condition. The local authorities, Ahmedabad Police, confirmed that foreign students at Gujarat University were targeted and robbed by unknown assailants, resulting in injuries.

Ahmedabad Police responded promptly to the incident, arriving at the scene to manage the situation. They have initiated proceedings against the accused individuals involved in the assault.

According to police reports, approximately 25 people were involved in the disruption during the prayer time. The altercation began when students were conducting their prayers around 10:30 pm and were asked by a group to cease their prayers, leading to a confrontation and subsequent destruction.

The Ahmedabad Police Commissioner, G.S. Malik, mentioned that a nine-team unit has been assembled to investigate the matter and identify the attackers. Two of the three injured students who were hospitalized are known to be from Tajikistan and Sri Lanka.

The incident has sparked criticism from various figures, including AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who called out Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, emphasizing their connections to Gujarat. NSUI national president Varun Chaudhary has appealed to the External Affairs Minister and the Education Minister for intervention in light of the assault on foreign students.
