Food Delivery Driver Killed After Routine Cleveland Drop-Off Turns Deadly

Police reported an arrest after an East Side double homicide, while detectives continued investigating a separate Fidelity Avenue killing.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Three men were killed in two separate Cleveland shootings over the weekend, leaving homicide detectives investigating an unsolved West Side killing while police reported a quick arrest after a double shooting on the East Side.

The violence began Saturday night when 33-year-old Delonzo Pennington was shot on Fidelity Avenue. Police responded to the 10900 block at about 9:14 p.m. and found him suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers and emergency medical personnel tried to save him, but he died at the scene. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified Pennington, a Cleveland resident.

News 5 Cleveland reported that Pennington was believed to have been making a food delivery shortly before he was killed. Surveillance video shows a driver stopping outside a home, placing a package on a porch and returning toward the vehicle. Another vehicle then pulls alongside the first car before gunshots are heard. Police told the station they believe the shooting involved an attempted robbery. No arrest had been announced in that investigation.

Less than a day later, officers were called to the 4100 block of East 120th Street near Miles Road at about 6 p.m. Sunday. Police found two wounded men at different locations along the street. Christopher Williams, 34, was found in the roadway and was taken to University Hospitals, where he died. Demetrius Pride Jr., 28, was found on a front porch and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified both men as Cleveland residents. Police said license plate reader technology helped investigators locate a person connected to the East 120th Street case in Akron within hours. News 5 reported that an arrest was made, though the circumstances surrounding the shooting continued to be investigated.

The two cases unfolded in different parts of the city and have not been described by authorities as connected. The Fidelity Avenue investigation remained open without an announced arrest, while the East 120th Street investigation moved quickly from the discovery of two victims to an arrest. Police have not released a full account of what led to either shooting.

Residents near both scenes described the killings as jarring. On Fidelity Avenue, neighbors saw a memorial of balloons and candles left near the curb after Pennington’s death. Near East 120th Street, a contractor who had been working on a nearby home told News 5 that his crew had finished shortly before the shooting and that the violence came as a surprise in the neighborhood.

The weekend cases also presented investigators with different sets of evidence. In Pennington’s killing, publicly reported surveillance footage captured the delivery and the arrival of another vehicle before the shooting. In the East 120th Street case, police said license plate reader information contributed to locating a suspect outside Cleveland. Authorities have not publicly released all of the evidence gathered in either investigation.

Police continued investigating both shootings Wednesday. The circumstances and motive behind the East 120th Street killings had not been fully detailed publicly, and Pennington’s killing remained without an announced arrest. Detectives had not reported any evidence linking the two incidents.
