Florida Man Charged with Violent Kidnapping and Torture of Sterling Heights Man

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A third suspect from Florida has been charged in the violent kidnapping and torture of a man outside a Macomb County gym last year. Renado Gary Coleman, 38, was apprehended in Tampa, Florida and extradited to Shelby Township to face charges in connection with the alleged attack.

Coleman was charged with 12 felony counts, including home invasion and armed robbery, and is being held in the Macomb County Jail on a $5 million cash-only bond. The Macomb County Prosecutor, Peter Lucido, emphasized the seriousness of the alleged crimes, stating that Coleman must be held accountable for his actions.

Authorities previously charged two other individuals from Tampa in connection with the case, and are in search of at least one more suspect. The kidnapping and torture took place outside a gym in October 2023, when the 24-year-old victim was carjacked at gunpoint by four armed and masked suspects.

Following the carjacking, the suspects allegedly tortured the victim and then drove to his residence. Sterling Heights officers arrived at the victim’s home and encountered one of the suspects in the truck with the victim. The abductor fled with the victim in the vehicle, prompting a police chase that ended in the suspect’s arrest and the recovery of a loaded assault rifle.

The investigation, which included several search warrants and interviews, eventually led detectives to the Tampa area where several arrests were made. The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office authorized 12 felonies against Coleman, including carjacking, armed robbery, torture, unlawful imprisonment, and first-degree home invasion, among others.

Shelby Township police extended their gratitude to various law enforcement agencies for their continued assistance in the case. A probable cause conference is scheduled for Coleman, and detectives continue to seek more information as the investigation unfolds.

The first suspect charged in the incident, Angel Antonio Andujar-Ruiz, remains in the Macomb County Jail on a $3 million cash bond. This case serves as a reminder of the collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies across different states.
