PATERSON, NJ – A tragic fire engulfed a home on Emerson Avenue late Friday night, leading to the deaths of five family members, including three children. The incident unfolded just before 10 p.m., casting a shadow over what was meant to be a joyful Halloween night.
Residents described the scene as terrifying, with flames and dense smoke rapidly consuming the home. One neighbor recounted how his father tried to battle the fire with a hose, but the efforts proved futile.
Firefighters arrived swiftly, cutting through the roof to fight the blaze. Despite their efforts, the upstairs residents—a 39-year-old man, a 38-year-old woman, and their children aged 14, 12, and seven—did not survive. Seven individuals living downstairs managed to escape unharmed.
Witnesses recalled the desperate moments as the fire spread. Samad Hussein, a neighbor, shared how his family first noticed the fire and alerted others. His nephew, Tasim Ahmed, rushed to the back of the house where a woman, believed to be the children’s mother, was seen attempting to put out the flames with water. Unfortunately, the wind intensified the blaze.
On Saturday, friends and relatives gathered to support the grieving family, helping to clear the charred remains. The community is in mourning, with many residents choosing not to speak publicly, still coming to terms with the event.
City officials noted that the deceased father was a prominent figure in the local Palestinian community, with ties to influential individuals, including a former deputy mayor and a current assemblyman. The loss has deeply affected the community, highlighting the family’s importance and contributions.
The American Red Cross has provided temporary housing, food, and clothing for the survivors. Neighbors expressed their sorrow, recalling the children’s playful sounds that will now be missed.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and are urging anyone with information to step forward. The tragedy has left a profound impact on the neighborhood, as residents grapple with the enormity of the loss.
