Esparto, California — A vibrant rural community was shaken Tuesday evening when a significant explosion erupted from a fireworks warehouse, igniting a fire that led to widespread evacuations in Yolo County. The incident, which occurred around 5:50 p.m., prompted the Esparto Fire Protection District to call in additional fire resources as numerous spot fires were reported near the facility.
Located on County Road 23, about a mile south of Esparto, the warehouse fire generated a series of blasts, scattering debris and releasing a strong, acrid odor across the surrounding fields. By 10 p.m., authorities expanded the mandatory evacuation zone south of County Road 23 due to the ongoing dangers posed by the fire.
CAL FIRE reported that the blaze, designated as the Oakdale Fire, had consumed approximately 78 acres by the time firefighters managed to stop its progress around 7:30 p.m. Esparto Fire Chief Curtis Lawrence confirmed that fire crews successfully contained the surrounding spot fires and established a perimeter around the property, which included multiple outbuildings.
Evacuations were primarily focused on nearby residences and ranches, with authorities indicating that these measures would remain in place throughout the night. Residents who evacuated described the frightening moments as the explosion rattled their homes. “All we felt was everything shake,” said Bryan Sandoval, an Esparto resident, who left his home with his family amid the chaos.
As the night progressed, fire crews from multiple agencies, including CAL FIRE, continued battling the flames. While officials did not release specific details about injuries or property damage, Chief Lawrence acknowledged that several structures had either been damaged or destroyed. The identity of the business involved in the incident has not been disclosed.
Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Arson and Bomb Unit were deployed to the scene to determine the cause of the fire and subsequent explosions. Yolo County Sheriff’s Office Captain Hernan Oviedo stated that the investigation is ongoing, with authorities looking into various factors surrounding the incident.
Residents watched from a distance as emergency crews worked diligently to manage the situation, aware that the events of the evening had fundamentally altered the sense of safety in their close-knit community.
