The victim’s family names him as Jason Elola; coroner’s findings pending as prosecutors review the case.
CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. — Alameda County authorities are investigating a road-rage crash and brief fight that killed a 49-year-old man Saturday evening near Wilbeam and Norbridge avenues. Relatives identified the victim as Jason Elola of Tracy. Another driver, 37-year-old Martin Davis Jr., was arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into Santa Rita Jail.
Deputies and CHP officers responded just before 8 p.m., finding Elola gravely injured on the street close to the Castro Valley BART station. He died at a hospital shortly after. Investigators say the two vehicles exited a nearby freeway and came into contact before a confrontation turned physical. Officials have not said if the crash was intentional. The suspect called a non-emergency number to report his involvement and returned when directed, investigators said. Detectives are seeking dashcam video and accounts from anyone traveling the corridor between 7:30 and 8 p.m.
Elola’s family said they were coming home from an 18th birthday dinner and planned to stop for ice cream at Loard’s. His son, Angel, said his father got out to check on his wife and two daughters after the contact with a dark SUV. “He tried to de-escalate,” Angel said, describing a short struggle that ended with his father on the ground. Elola’s wife, Gabrielle, said the SUV hit their car more than once. She ran to him and found him unable to speak. A cousin, Joseph Munoz, called him “the person you could count on.”
Officials have not released autopsy findings. Relatives believe head trauma may be involved, but the coroner will determine the cause and manner of death. Detectives are reviewing surveillance from nearby businesses and transportation hubs and interviewing additional witnesses. Authorities said no weapons have been confirmed. The sheriff’s office has asked anyone with video or information to come forward as they try to clarify the sequence of events from freeway exit to the final moments on Wilbeam Avenue.
The suspect remained in custody Tuesday. Prosecutors will assess the evidence for potential charges after receiving investigative reports and preliminary coroner results. Any charging decision could come later this week, officials said. Meanwhile, candles and flowers line the sidewalk where the fight occurred, and relatives are preparing funeral arrangements while waiting for more answers.
As of Tuesday evening, investigators had not announced new details about the initial contact between vehicles or whether other motorists were struck. A charging decision and preliminary autopsy report are expected later this week, the next public milestones in the case.
