Explosion at Fireworks Factory in Central Thailand Claims 23 Lives

Suphan Buri, Thailand – A tragic explosion at a fireworks factory in central Thailand has claimed the lives of 23 people, the provincial governor confirmed. The blast, which occurred in Suphan Buri province near Sala Khao township, resulted in a devastating scene of metal debris scattered on the ground and a massive plume of black smoke.

Governor Nattapat Suwanprateep stated that the explosion took place at around 3:00 pm local time, with the Explosive Ordinance Disposal team confirming the 23 deaths. As of now, the cause of the explosion remains unknown and is currently under investigation by authorities.

Despite the devastation, officials have confirmed that the factory was operating legally with valid licenses. However, the surrounding area experienced minor damage, with a few glass windows being affected by the explosion.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who is currently abroad, has been notified of the incident and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. He has ordered a thorough investigation to determine whether the factory was operating illegally and the cause of the tragic explosion.

Explosions at fireworks and pyrotechnics workshops are unfortunately not uncommon in Thailand. The country has a poor safety record in the construction sector and has experienced several deadly accidents in recent years.

Last year, at least 10 people died in a similar explosion at a fireworks warehouse in southern Narathiwat province, while 11 others were injured in a separate incident in the northern city of Chiang Mai. These incidents highlight the urgent need for stricter safety regulations and enforcement in these industries to prevent further tragedies.
