Iseyin, Nigeria — A violent confrontation on Eid day, involving members of the Christ Apostolic Church and a local Muslim family, has ignited a wave of condemnation and prompted actions from religious and community leaders in Oyo State. Local authorities reported that the altercation ensued when a pastor and some congregants from the church allegedly assaulted Mr. Sulaimon AbdulAzeez and his two wives. The attack reportedly escalated after AbdulAzeez prepared to slaughter a ram near the church premises, an act that the pastor argued was provocative.
According to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), immediate sanctions were imposed on the involved clergy, and directives were issued for the relocation of the church to prevent further disturbances. Apostle Sunday Ogundairo, a CAN representative in Iseyin, emphasized the organization’s commitment to fostering peace and respecting mutual religious beliefs in the community.
The Muslim Rights Council (MURIC) also stepped forward, with Executive Director Prof. Isiaq Akintola linking the incident to ongoing disputes regarding noise and space usage between the church and local Muslim residents. MURIC’s director condemned the military’s participation as excessive and unwarranted, leading to calls for an official investigation by the army into the conduct of its troops.
The Muslim family involved recounted their harrowing experience, expressing that the incident had marred what should have been a festive and peaceful celebration of Eid.
