The gunfire happened during the morning rush in a residential North Side block.
CHICAGO, Ill. — A Thursday morning shooting in Edgewater left one man dead and another man critically wounded, prompting a police investigation near two schools on Chicago’s North Side.
Chicago police said officers were called about 7:19 a.m. to the 1400 block of West Thome Avenue, between Greenview and Glenwood avenues. Two men were found outside with gunshot wounds. One man was pronounced dead at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, while a 53-year-old man remained in critical condition.
The shooting happened near Hayt Elementary School and Northside Catholic Academy, but officials said no students were involved. The scene drew police, fire crews and neighbors to a normally quiet stretch of homes and apartment buildings. Streets were blocked while officers searched the area and collected evidence.
Police said weapons were recovered as part of the investigation. A preliminary account reported by local public safety outlets said detectives were looking into whether one man shot the other before turning the gun on himself, but police had not publicly confirmed a final account of the shooting by Thursday afternoon.
Witnesses described hearing several gunshots with pauses between them. John O’Malley, who lives nearby, said he first heard popping sounds from inside his home, then looked outside and saw two people down. He said a dog was lying near one of the wounded men when officers arrived.
Residents said one of the victims may have been walking the dog when the shooting began. Police have not released the dead man’s name, and the Cook County medical examiner’s office was expected to make an identification after family notification.
The shooting brought a heavy police presence to Edgewater during a busy part of the morning. Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth told residents the people shot were adults and that the area had been secured. Schools nearby continued to communicate with families as police worked the scene.
Detectives were still reviewing witness statements, recovered weapons and the timeline of the shooting. No charges had been announced, and police had not said whether they were seeking any additional suspect.
The investigation remained active Thursday, with the next major update expected from police or the medical examiner after the victim is identified.
