White Bear Township, MN—In a tragic incident that has gripped the community, a 72-year-old woman lost her life after being struck by an SUV in a designated crosswalk on Thursday afternoon. The driver, identified as 46-year-old Christopher Ronald Olson, is now facing charges including three counts of criminal vehicular homicide.
The crash occurred when the victim was crossing at the intersection of White Bear Parkway and Birch Lake Boulevard, where she had the right of way and was acknowledged by other stopped vehicles. However, the Kia Telluride, driven by Olson, failed to halt and collided with her, resulting in her immediate death at the scene.
Shortly after the incident, within 20 minutes, Olson and his mother arrived at the White Bear Lake Police Department to surrender. In his confession, Olson admitted to operating the vehicle involved in the fatal crash and disclosed to law enforcement officials that he had consumed alcohol prior to driving.
Initial tests at the police station showed Olson’s impairment, with a recorded blood alcohol concentration of 0.154, significantly exceeding the state’s legal limit of 0.08. During the assessment, Olson struggled with the sobriety exercises, and openly admitted his inability to perform some tasks due to his consumption of alcohol.
During his interaction with the police, Olson revealed that his consumption included four shooter bottles of vodka consumed after his workday, which he claimed contributed to his distracted state at the time of the accident. He recalled setting his vehicle’s cruise control to 40 mph and admitted his attention was not fully on the road.
In the aftermath, Olson expressed that he had panicked and driven to his mother’s residence. It was after discussing with her that he decided to turn himself in to the authorities.
