Desperate Search Underway for People Trapped in Sydney Unit Block Explosion

Western Sydney, Australia – Authorities are actively searching for individuals believed to be trapped within a building in Whalan after an explosion caused significant damage and debris to scatter across the area.

Emergency responders arrived at Waikanda Cres in Whalan shortly before 1 pm on Saturday after receiving reports of an explosion that caused the second level of the unit block to “blow out.” Rescue teams from Fire and Rescue NSW are combing through the remains in search of missing persons from the residence.

Several individuals were already evacuated from the property, with two individuals transported to Mt Druitt Hospital in undisclosed conditions. Additional patients were reportedly taken to the hospital, though confirmation is still pending.

The explosion, which occurred around lunchtime on Saturday, prompted a large-scale response by emergency services. At least 12 Fire and Rescue NSW vehicles, along with ambulance crews, hazmat teams, and aerial units, remain at the scene, working diligently to address the situation.

Local residents took to social media to share their experiences after hearing a loud noise in the vicinity. One resident in Lethbridge Park recounted feeling and hearing the explosion from their front yard, underscoring the impact of the incident on the community.
