Decatur Man Wanted on Animal Cruelty Charges Caught, Released Until Trial

DECATUR, Illinois — Derrick D. Tyus, the Decatur man sought on animal cruelty charges after police discovered two dead puppies in his yard, has been apprehended, the Decatur Police Department announced Thursday.

Following their discovery, Tyus was booked into Macon County Jail and subsequently released pending trial.

According to Lt. Scott Rosenbery, Tyus was processed at the jail at 12:07 a.m. Thursday and released at 12:30 a.m., with an order to report to the Macon County State’s Attorney’s office on Jan. 11 at 9 a.m.

The police had sought the public’s assistance in locating the 53-year-old defendant after the puppies were found by patrol officers last December. One of the puppies, however, was found alive and is now under the care of the Macon County Animal Control and Care Center.

Tyus is now facing three charges relating to animal cruelty.

The Decatur Police Department is committed to prioritizing animal cruelty cases and ensuring that animals receive the care they deserve. This is part of their proactive approach to addressing and investigating such cases.

The story is a part of the ongoing efforts of law enforcement officials and animal welfare advocates to take strong action against animal cruelty, which includes not treating it as a minor offense.

Regrettably, animal cruelty cases like this continue to be reported across the country, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and enforcement of animal protection laws.
