Deadly Tornadoes Wreak Havoc Across Central U.S., Leaving 22 Dead and Hundreds Injured

Dallas, Texas – A series of severe storms have ravaged the central part of the United States, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. At least 22 people have lost their lives, and hundreds have been injured as tornadoes touched down in various states.

In Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, some of the most devastating weather has been reported. Cook County, Texas, near the Oklahoma border, saw seven fatalities, including two young children aged 5 and 2. The tornado that struck on Saturday resulted in widespread devastation, with homes completely destroyed. Texas Governor Greg Abbott expanded the disaster declaration from April to include more counties affected by the recent storms and flooding.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear confirmed five fatalities in the state, including a man who suffered a heart attack while trying to clear fallen trees. Arkansas reported eight deaths, while Oklahoma reported two due to the severe weather.

A tornado hit Charleston, Kentucky, on Sunday, leaving a path of destruction that stretched 40 miles. The town lost power and water services, and residents are now working to clear downed trees and debris.

As of Monday evening, over 200,000 people in the Southern and Eastern U.S. were still without power. City Manager John Feary of Claremore, Oklahoma, stated that crews are working tirelessly to clear roads and debris, focusing on areas hit the hardest.

Arkansas also faced significant damage from tornadoes, with reports of debris, uprooted trees, and businesses damaged. The severe weather has caused disruptions for Memorial Day travelers, with over 500 U.S. flights canceled and more than 7,700 delayed on Monday.

The Storm Prediction Center warned of lingering severe storms in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions on Monday night. Tornado watches were issued for the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia, with a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for parts of Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.

In Texas, additional storms were forecasted for Monday night, bringing the potential for hail and strong winds. The affected regions are now focused on recovery efforts and ensuring the safety of residents impacted by the severe weather.
