Deadly Crashes in Brazos Valley Linked to Rainy Weather and Dangerous Driving Conditions

BRENHAM, Texas – Deadly crashes in the Brazos Valley during Monday’s rainfall have been attributed to driving too fast for the wet roads and hydroplaning, according to details provided by DPS troopers. Two individuals lost their lives in separate incidents, both caused by dangerous road conditions.

In the first crash, a collision on Highway 290 and Sunset Road west of Brenham resulted in the deaths of two individuals. An eastbound SUV crossed into the westbound lanes and was struck by a semi, killing the SUV’s driver, identified as 59-year-old Anita Goodrich of Brenham, and an unidentified passenger. The driver of the semi sustained suspected minor injuries and was taken to a Brenham hospital.

Another deadly crash occurred in Grimes County, where a car on Highway 249 near county road 304 struck a concrete culvert, overturned, and became submerged in water. The driver, identified as 26-year-old Stephen Oderinde of Spring, tragically lost his life.

Department of public safety Sgt. Justin Ruiz emphasized that worn out tires and speed on rain-covered highways were contributing factors to the deadly crashes, resulting in hydroplaning. To prevent similar incidents in the future, Ruiz suggested actions such as maintaining a safe distance around other vehicles, adjusting headlights to stay on at all times, avoiding the use of cruise control, refraining from driving through flooded highways, staying informed on roadway and weather conditions, and following local news and authorities for updates.

The tragic accidents serve as a somber reminder of the dangers posed by wet road conditions and the importance of taking necessary precautions to ensure road safety. This unfortunate loss of lives underscores the need for drivers to remain vigilant and exercise caution when driving in adverse weather conditions.
