Rambler Athens reminded residents about window safety limiters after a 21-year-old student survived an eighth-floor fall Saturday.
ATHENS, Ga. — An eighth-floor fall that seriously injured a University of Georgia student has brought new attention to windows at a downtown Athens apartment complex after management reminded residents that the building’s windows have safety limiters.
Kristin Sargent, 21, fell Saturday evening from an eighth-floor apartment at Rambler Athens on West Broad Street. Police said witnesses reported that she was dancing on a couch or air mattress near an open window before going through its screen and falling to the second-floor courtyard and pool deck. Investigators have said the evidence indicates the fall was accidental.
After the incident, Rambler Athens management sent residents a message saying windows throughout the community are equipped with safety limiters. Residents were told not to tamper with, remove or disengage the devices and to contact management if they have concerns about a window or limiter.
The message did not establish whether the safety limiter on the window involved in Sargent’s fall was engaged, disengaged or functioning at the time. Police also have not announced a finding about the condition of the limiter. Those details remain unresolved as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the fall.
Athens-Clarke County police, firefighters and emergency medical personnel were called to the complex at about 7:37 p.m. Saturday. Responders found Sargent near the pool on the courtyard deck. Investigators documented evidence indicating she may have struck a metal bench during the fall before she was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.
Witnesses told police Sargent had been dancing or jumping on furniture inside the apartment before the fall. Police said the evidence collected at the scene was consistent with an accident, though the investigation remained open. Authorities have not announced criminal charges.
The complex’s management said it was continuing to gather information and review what happened. It also expressed concern for Sargent and her family and asked residents and the public to respect their privacy while she receives treatment.
Students interviewed after the incident described the Rambler as having a central courtyard and pool surrounded by apartments. Some expressed surprise that a fall from such a height was survivable and raised questions about how far upper-floor windows can open. Those reactions have not established that a window device malfunctioned or that the building violated a safety requirement.
Police reports released after the fall identified Sargent as a resident of the apartment. Initial information from authorities said she was conscious and alert despite her serious injuries. Subsequent reports said she was recovering, but officials have not released a detailed medical prognosis.
The investigation has not produced a public finding that a safety device failed or contributed to the accident. The condition and position of the window limiter at the time of the fall have not been publicly established, leaving that question unanswered as police and apartment management continue reviewing the incident.
