Community Support Pours in for Fort Smith, N.W.T. After Tragic Plane Crash

FORT SMITH, NWT – The town of Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, is reeling from a tragic plane crash that claimed six lives. The community is coming together to support one another during this difficult time.

Aunty’s Korner Store has been offering free coffee to visitors as a way to provide comfort and support. Co-owner Darlene Sibbeston emphasized the importance of being there for people, even if there are no words to express the magnitude of the emotional impact of the crash.

Deputy mayor Dianna Korol mentioned that the small town is in shock and still processing the tragic event. Town officials have been inviting people to the community recreation center for snacks and beverages as the community comes together to lean on one another for support.

Mental health supports are available at the hospital for those in need, and a candlelight vigil is planned for Wednesday evening at St. Joseph’s Cathedral. The vigil is a way for the community to grieve and come together as they mourn the loss of their loved ones.

Outside of Fort Smith, neighboring towns like Hay River are also offering support to those impacted by the crash. The youth center in Hay River has opened its doors to anyone needing a place to gather, offering free coffee and tea as well as a place to process the tragedy together.

Despite the geographical distance, the communities are closely knit, and the outpouring of support from neighboring towns demonstrates the unity and solidarity in the face of adversity. As the community continues to come to terms with the tragedy, the support and generosity from all corners is a testament to the strength and resilience of the people in the region.
