Community Gathers for Vigil After Deadly Plane Crash in Fort Smith, N.W.T.

FORT SMITH, N.W.T. – A somber candlelight vigil took place at the cathedral in Fort Smith on Wednesday night following a tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of six individuals. The plane, carrying seven people, went down near the town’s airport just a day prior. Among the victims were two crew members and four passengers who were on their way to work at the Diavik Diamond Mine, while the sole survivor was also a mine employee.

The tight-knit community of Fort Smith, with a population of approximately 2200 people, came together at the cathedral for the emotional vigil. Representatives from the town’s three churches orchestrated the event, which featured heartfelt prayers, soulful songs, and impassioned calls from community leaders to provide support to one another and remain resilient during this difficult time.

The poignant gathering drew a large crowd, with first responders and RCMP officers in attendance to show their support. Rev. Aaron Solberg of St. John’s Anglican Church expressed that the goal of the vigil was to offer solace and strength to those in mourning. As the town grapples with the heartbreaking loss, the vigil served as a beacon of hope and unity in the face of tragedy.

Meanwhile, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada is conducting an investigation into the fatal crash, seeking to determine the cause of the tragic accident. The community remains in mourning as they come to terms with the devastating loss of their fellow residents.
