Steamboat Springs, Colorado — A man accused of plotting a mass shooting at a well-known ski resort in the area now faces serious allegations involving fentanyl distribution connected to the deaths of two individuals. Nathaniel Zabik, 44, of Breckenridge, was detained by law enforcement earlier this month after making alarming threats on social media regarding the resort.
According to the Steamboat Springs Police Department, Zabik is among a trio implicated in a fentanyl trafficking operation. This group is thought to have sold the synthetic opioid responsible for the overdose deaths of two residents in Steamboat Springs. Alongside Zabik, two others—Benjamin Tabor, 48, of Avon, and Matthew Bentley, 37, from Riverbank, California—also face significant charges, including distributing fentanyl that resulted in fatalities.
Authorities identified the suspects following a lengthy investigation involving multiple agencies including local sheriff departments and law enforcement in California. “Out of respect for the victims’ families, we are withholding certain details,” a police spokesperson noted.
The charges against Zabik for his alleged threats to the Breckenridge Ski Resort are serious. He faces two counts each of inciting destruction of life or property and menacing with a weapon, as well as two counts of harassment. He is currently being held at the Summit County Detention Facility under a cash-only bond set at $25,000.
If convicted on the drug-related charges, which include the classification of distributing fentanyl resulting in death, Zabik and his co-defendants could face prison sentences ranging from eight to 32 years. Federal charges could lead to even stiffer penalties, with sentences potentially extending from 20 years to life.
The fentanyl crisis continues to raise alarms across the country, with law enforcement focusing on identifying and dismantling networks responsible for trafficking the dangerous substance. Local authorities urge communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
The investigation shines a spotlight on both the ongoing drug epidemic affecting many regions and the critical need for addressing threats to public safety. As the case develops, it will likely follow a series of legal proceedings to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
