Clinton Township Explosion Investigation Hindered by Dangerous Conditions, On-Site Probe Delayed

Clinton Township, Michigan – Fire officials in Clinton Township announced that the site of a recent explosion and fire near Groesbeck Highway and 15 Mile Road is still too hazardous for investigators to access directly as of Friday. Due to the dangerous conditions, an on-site investigation by the Clinton Township Fire Department is expected to commence next week. The investigative team includes members from various agencies such as the Clinton Township police and fire departments, the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Michigan State Police, and private investigators.

Fire Chief Tim Duncan assured the public that despite the delay in the on-scene investigation, progress is being made through video footage, interviews, and drone technology. The department has been actively using drones to monitor the scene and capture footage that will aid in the investigation.

The explosion, which occurred at a former Save-A-Lot grocery building housing Goo vape and smoke shop and Select Distributors Wholesale, resulted in debris being scattered up to two miles from the blast location. The township has declared a local state of emergency due to the incident.

Authorities are still working to determine the cause of the explosion, which involved nitrous oxide and butane tanks stored at the facility. The site remains unstable, with small fires continuing to rekindle. The presence of structural steel from the collapsed building poses a challenge for investigators.

City officials emphasize the importance of safety, warning residents not to touch any debris from the blast and to report any findings to the appropriate authorities. Cleanup efforts are ongoing, with the Environmental Protection Agency involved in ensuring the area is cleared safely.

In the wake of the tragedy, the community mourns the loss of 19-year-old Turner Lee Slater, who tragically lost his life in the explosion. Authorities are dedicated to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident and holding those responsible accountable. As the investigation progresses, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
