Chicago Police Officer Injured, Suspect Killed in Traffic Stop Exchange of Gunfire

Chicago, Illinois – A Chicago police officer was injured and a 26-year-old man was killed in a shootout during a traffic stop, according to police reports. The incident occurred in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the city’s West Side.

The wounded officer, shot in the wrist, is reported to be in good condition after being hospitalized, while four other officers who were not hit also received medical attention for observation. The man who fired at the officers sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after the altercation. He was identified as Dexter Reed, 26, by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

During a statement released by the Chicago Police, it was revealed that the exchange of gunfire happened around 6 p.m. while officers were near a car they had pulled over. The exact number of officers who discharged their weapons has not been disclosed at this time.

Following the incident, more than 50 rounds were detected by the ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system. A firearm was also recovered at the scene of the shooting. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is currently investigating the shooting, with the officers involved set to be placed on administrative duties for 30 days as part of the standard procedure following such incidents.
