Green Island, New Zealand – A confrontation that escalated rapidly left three police officers hospitalized after two brothers resisted arrest following a traffic stop. The incident began when a vehicle halted prematurely at a police checkpoint along Brighton Rd late Friday afternoon.
According to Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond from Dunedin, the driver, a 33-year-old man, reacted aggressively when asked to comply with a breathalyzer test, refusing to step out of his vehicle. As officers persisted, the situation intensified, with the driver exiting his car and physically assaulting a police officer. He reportedly pinned the officer to the ground, striking him multiple times in the head.
The driver’s younger brother, a 24-year-old passenger in the car, joined the fray soon after, attacking the officers as they attempted to subdue his elder sibling. In response to the escalating violence, both brothers were subdued with tasers.
The older brother faces multiple charges including aggravated assault and failing to comply with police directions. His younger sibling has been charged with aggravated assault.
This morning, both men were scheduled to appear before the Dunedin District Court to respond to these charges.
The aftermath of the altercation saw three police personnel requiring medical attention at Dunedin Hospital. One officer suffered potential concussion alongside facial injuries, another endured head trauma, and the third was treated for a possible shoulder dislocation.
Senior Sergeant Karl Hemmingsen expressed his dismay over the attack, emphasizing the danger posed to officers due to the violent resistance they encountered. Highlighting the root cause of the incident, he pointed to the driver’s unwillingness to accept the repercussions of drinking and driving.
These events have sparked discussions within the community and among local law enforcement about the risks officers face during routine traffic stops and the necessary measures needed to ensure their safety. Police advocates stress the importance of compliance during such checks to prevent these potentially deadly encounters.
Community members and officials alike are calling for increased awareness and preventive measures in light of the violent incident to ensure the safety of law enforcement personnel tasked with maintaining public order and safety.
