Chaos Erupts at Reno Casino: Gunman Fires 80 Rounds, Leaving Three Dead and Motive Still a Mystery

Reno, Nevada – A shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino on Monday morning resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left several others injured. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Dakota Hawver, opened fire with a 9mm handgun, discharging approximately 80 rounds before being critically injured by police during a shootout.

The Sparks Police Department, which is leading the investigation, revealed Tuesday that Hawver’s connection to the victims or the casino remains unclear. Investigators found no prior link between him and the establishment or those he targeted. Just before 7:30 a.m., Hawver approached the valet area on foot and began his attack, catching the victims off guard.

Two of the deceased, Justin Aguila, 23, and Andrew Canepa, 33, were reportedly shot in the back while waiting for transportation to the airport. Both men had traveled to Reno from Southern California to attend a bachelor party. The third victim, 66-year-old Angel Martinez, was shot multiple times while driving through the parking lot, also by the suspect, who emerged from behind another vehicle.

Authorities confirmed that Hawver had legally acquired the firearm approximately two years ago, with recent reports indicating he had bought ammunition shortly before the incident. Remarkably, he has no previous criminal record or documented mental health concerns.

Two additional victims sustained injuries during the shooting and remain hospitalized. However, medical staff expect them to make a full recovery, providing some relief amid the tragic events.

Witnesses described the chaotic scene as panicked guests at the casino took cover during the attack. Police reports reveal that the gun malfunctioned early in the shooting, giving the suspect a moment to regroup before he was able to fire at the crowd. Following the initial attack, he attempted to flee but encountered an armed security guard, resulting in an exchange of gunfire in which he was injured.

Authorities are still piecing together the timeline and rationale for the attack, as investigators comb through evidence and interview witnesses. The community is left grappling with the aftermath of violence that has created a palpable sense of fear and uncertainty.

As the investigation continues, local officials are urging anyone with information about the events leading up to the shooting to come forward, hoping to shed light on the motives behind the tragedy.
