Baby in her arms, gun in her hand: Boyfriend shot after warning scream

The man was taken to Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition after the early-morning shooting.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A man was taken to a Miami trauma center in critical condition after deputies said his girlfriend shot him in the right arm during an argument around 1:50 a.m. Wednesday at an apartment complex in northwest Miami-Dade, and the woman was taken into custody.

The investigation centered on Centre Lake Apartments, located at 15754 NW Seventh Ave., near Interstate 95 and the Golden Glades area. Deputies have not released the names of the couple or explained what sparked the confrontation, but multiple witnesses described a tense scene involving children that spilled outdoors and drew police and rescue crews before dawn. By late morning, detectives were still working the case as residents described the sounds of shouting, a crying baby and a sudden gunshot.

According to deputies, the dispute unfolded during the overnight hours and escalated quickly. Neighbors said the argument was loud enough to wake them up, and at least one witness said the screaming continued long enough that he stopped assuming it was ordinary noise. He said he heard a baby crying as the shouting carried through the complex. When he looked outside, he said he saw a woman holding an infant while she argued with a man, with the two moving back and forth near vehicles and building walkways.

Witnesses said the woman repeatedly demanded distance, shouting variations of “Get away from my baby” and “Get away from me,” as the man kept approaching. One witness said the man appeared angry and began striking a car, punching at its windows. Residents later pointed to damage, including a window with a hole, as evidence of how forceful the blows were. A witness said the man also threw an object during the confrontation, though he could not identify what was thrown. The witness said he called 911 as the argument intensified.

Deputies said the woman shot the man in his right arm during what authorities described as a heated dispute. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he was listed in critical condition. The woman was detained, deputies said, and investigators began interviewing residents and securing the area. Patrol cars and crime scene activity remained visible around the complex for hours after the shooting, with residents watching from windows and doorways as deputies moved through the scene.

In witness accounts, concern about children became a major part of the confrontation’s final minutes. One witness said the man started to head back toward the apartment at one point, and the woman warned him not to go inside. The witness said he believed she was trying to prevent the man from entering because another child was in the home. Later, investigators were seen escorting a young boy, estimated by witnesses to be about 5 years old, into an unmarked vehicle that stayed at the location for hours. Authorities have not said whether the child was related to either adult or whether the child witnessed the shooting.

Deputies have not described any arrests beyond the woman being taken into custody, and they have not announced formal charges. Officials also have not said whether the shooting stemmed from an ongoing domestic dispute, whether any prior reports were connected to the couple, or whether the woman claimed she fired to protect herself or her children. Investigators have not released details about where the couple was standing at the time of the gunfire, how many shots were fired, or whether a firearm was recovered at the scene. The case remained active as detectives continued to gather statements and examine evidence.

Residents said the overnight violence left the complex shaken, especially because the argument played out where neighbors could hear nearly every word. One witness said the baby’s crying made the situation feel urgent as the adults argued outside. Another witness described the man’s repeated movement toward the woman even as she demanded he back away. Neighbors said the shift from shouting to gunfire felt sudden, followed by the arrival of emergency responders and a long stretch of flashing lights and police tape that marked off parts of the property.

As of Wednesday afternoon, deputies said the investigation was continuing, with the man still hospitalized in critical condition and the woman still in custody while detectives worked to determine what led to the shooting and what charges, if any, would be filed.
