Arrest made a month after DoorDash driver shot in Mesquite

Manuel Gonzales survived five gunshot wounds in an Oct. 26 attack on Birch Bend; a 17-year-old suspect was booked Monday.

MESQUITE, Texas — Mesquite police arrested a 17-year-old on Monday in connection with a late-night shooting that seriously injured DoorDash driver Manuel Gonzales during an October delivery, authorities said. Officers served search and arrest warrants at a home on Regent Street and took the teen into custody.

The arrest follows weeks of public attention as Gonzales, 29, recovered from multiple wounds and neighbors asked for updates on the investigation. Police said the gunman ran from the scene after shots were fired just after midnight on Birch Bend, east of I-635. Investigators have not released the suspect’s booking photo, and formal charges were not listed Monday evening. Detectives say they are still building a timeline and gathering recordings from the block.

According to relatives, Gonzales was shot in the arm, both legs and stomach, and a bullet grazed his chin. He used voice commands to call for help, then waited in his vehicle until officers arrived and rendered aid. The father of three went home last week after nearly a month in the hospital. In interviews, Gonzales said an argument over a required delivery PIN code preceded the attack, and that he identified the suspected shooter to first responders before he was taken to surgery.

Detectives later focused on a teen they believe fled the area on foot. The warrants executed Monday were served about four miles from where the DoorDash order was delivered. Police did not say whether the suspect lives at the Birch Bend address or if he has ties to people at the home. Officials also did not describe the firearm used or say whether they recovered a weapon during the search. No additional suspects were publicly identified as of Monday night, and investigators did not outline a suspected motive.

Neighbors reported hearing a burst of gunfire, followed by a car horn blaring in the street. Crime scene technicians collected shell casings and canvassed for residential doorbell video. Delivery drivers who frequent the area said the shooting has prompted them to be more cautious at late hours, and some residents have left porch lights on longer. Police said patrols increased in the immediate aftermath while detectives worked the case and re-interviewed witnesses to verify times and descriptions.

The teen was being booked into the Dallas County jail after the afternoon arrest. Authorities said the arrest affidavit is expected to be filed once booking is complete, which would detail probable cause and any statements obtained. Prosecutors will review the case for charges that could include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Police did not list a court date and said they would release more information after the affidavit is processed and any additional evidence is tested at the lab.

Family members said they are relieved by the arrest but are waiting to learn why the shooting happened. As of late Monday, police had not discussed a motive, and the suspect’s mug shot had not been posted by jailers pending intake procedures.
