Armed Robbery Gang Member Shot Dead by Anambra State Police at Checkpoint

Anambra State, Nigeria – An unidentified member of a four-man robbery gang was fatally shot by police officers at a checkpoint in the Igboukwu community of Aguata Local Government Area. The suspect was killed after pulling out a pistol in an attempt to shoot the officers.

The incident occurred on Sunday, and the remaining three members of the gang were also apprehended. Police recovered a Barreta pistol and a dagger from the suspects. According to the state police spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects had boarded a commercial bus from Nnewi and were en route to an undisclosed location before encountering the police at the checkpoint.

The police officers at the Anambra State Police Command dismantled the armed gang at the Igboukwu checkpoint. The officers stopped the gang for a search when one of the individuals alighted from the bus and brandished a pistol, resulting in the use of lethal force by the authorities.

As a result of the incident, the State Criminal Investigation Department has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation by the Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye. Additionally, two elderly passengers who boarded the bus at a different location have been released immediately. The police aim to reassure the people of Anambra State that they will continue to fulfill their duty in safeguarding the lives and property of law-abiding citizens in the state.
