FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A man from northern Arizona has been handed a life sentence for the murder and starvation of his 6-year-old son in 2020, court officials confirmed. The tragic case has refocused attention on the severe consequences of child abuse and neglect.
Anthony Martinez, 28, received the life sentence for first-degree murder on Friday, alongside additional concurrent sentences for child abuse and kidnapping relating to the treatment of his deceased son, Deshaun Martinez, and another older child. The Coconino County Superior Court also sentenced Martinez to concurrent three-year terms for two counts of aggravated assault.
During the sentencing, the judge underscored the horrific nature of the crime, noting its particular cruelty and the breach of trust, given Martinez was the father of the victims. The court acknowledged Martinez’s traumatic childhood and lack of prior felonies but found these factors insufficient to mitigate the severity of his actions.
Authorities detailed that Deshaun had been confined to a small closet for approximately 16 hours daily over a month with his older brother. The punishment was reportedly for taking food at night. This prolonged maltreatment led to Deshaun’s death, with his drastically underweight condition at the time of death highlighting the extent of his suffering — an autopsy reported he weighed only 18 pounds.
Martinez, who refrained from speaking during his hearing, had a letter read on his behalf by his defense attorney, in which he apologized to his children for the suffering he caused. Adding to the family’s grim narrative, Elizabeth Archibeque, the boy’s mother, also received a life sentence without the possibility of parole in July 2023. She had pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and child abuse.
