Police said four others were injured after gunfire broke out near Holloway Avenue and South Cleveland Street.
ALBANY, Ga. — A 31-year-old woman was killed and four other people were injured Tuesday night when gunfire broke out near Holloway Avenue and South Cleveland Street, Albany police said.
Kiambria Young, a mother of five, died after the shooting, which officials said happened at about 10:43 p.m. April 28. Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler confirmed the death, and Albany police said the case remains under investigation after a suspect was later arrested in connection with the violence.
Police said officers responded to the area near the 1000 block of South Cleveland Street after the shooting was reported. Young was among five people struck by gunfire. Her family said she was known by loved ones as a devoted mother whose daily life centered on work and her children. Octavius Spencer, who said he was Young’s friend, said she was “a good spirit” and someone people in the neighborhood expected to see with her children after work.
Spencer said the shots came quickly and forced people nearby to take cover. He said he later heard someone yell that Young had been hit. He told reporters he saw Young on the ground and spoke with police at the scene. A neighbor who did not want to be identified said the shooting deepened fear among families in the area, where children often play outside and residents worry about sudden violence near their homes.
By Wednesday, community members had begun placing items at the scene to honor Young. One woman, identified as Beauty, said she came because the killing affected her as a mother. She said Young’s death would be felt beyond one household, calling the neighborhood a village where one loss makes life harder for many people. Young’s family also began accepting donations for funeral costs and care for her children.
Albany police later identified Braylen Robinson as a person of interest in the South Cleveland Street shooting. Police said Robinson was also linked to a second shooting April 29 in South Albany, where a man riding in a vehicle with a woman and an infant was shot. The woman driving the vehicle crashed while trying to get the injured man to the hospital, and police said people involved in the crash were taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Robinson was taken into custody after officers tried to make contact with him and a pursuit followed, police said. He was booked into the Dougherty County Jail on charges including three counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement officers, reckless driving and felony fleeing or attempting to elude. Police had not released a motive, and the names of the other shooting victims had not been made public.
The homicide investigation remains open as police continue to review the shootings and the events that followed. As of May 3, officials had reported one death, multiple injuries and one arrest tied to the case.
