26-Year-Old Arrested Ahead of Olympic Torch Relay in Bordeaux for Suspected Violent Attack Plot

Bordeaux, France – A 26-year-old male was apprehended by French authorities in Gironde on Thursday, just prior to the Olympic torch relay in Bordeaux, as confirmed by French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin. The individual, identified as Alex G. from the southwestern region of France, was suspected of planning a violent attack coinciding with the procession of the Olympic torch through Bordeaux.

Authorities expressed gratitude toward the diligent work of police officers and agents from the French Ministry of the Interior in ensuring the security of the event. Bordeaux prosecutor Frédérique Porterie revealed that the suspect had acknowledged contemplating an act of violence, although no specific target or mention of the Olympic torch relay was made. Despite having no prior criminal record, Alex G. was linked to the “incel” movement, known for promoting violence against women.

The investigation into Alex G. was initiated on May 17 when he made online posts referencing a deadly shooting in California in 2014. Authorities suspected that his alleged plans were in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the California incident. The arrest of Alex G. raises concerns and highlights the ongoing efforts by French authorities to maintain security ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris on July 26.

The Olympic torch, on an 11-week journey across France, is scheduled to pass through 450 towns before reaching the destination for the opening of the Games. With the growing security challenges and various threat perceptions, France has implemented heightened security measures in recent months to safeguard the well-being of participants and spectators. The incident in Bordeaux serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and preparedness in the face of potential threats during significant events like the Olympics.
