Christopher Davey, 25, was walking toward a laundromat when he was fatally stabbed near his East Flatbush home, his family says.
NEW YORK — Jamaican dancehall veteran Powerman is mourning the death of his 25-year-old son, Christopher Davey, who was fatally stabbed Friday evening near his home in East Flatbush as police continued searching for two men connected to the attack.
Davey was attacked near 882 Albany Ave. shortly before 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4. Police responding to a report of an assault found him suffering from stab wounds to his torso. Emergency crews took him to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No arrests had been announced by Sunday, and authorities had not identified a motive.
Michael Davey, the victim’s father and a veteran Jamaican dancehall performer known professionally as Powerman, said Christopher’s mother had sent him to a nearby laundromat before the attack. He said his son encountered two men less than a block from his destination. Police have not publicly explained what happened immediately before the stabbing.
The father publicly confirmed his son’s death after news of the killing spread. In interviews and social media posts, he described the shock confronting the family after Christopher’s mother called him following the attack. The family has called for those responsible to be found as detectives continue investigating.
Michael Davey told News 12 that his son loved cooking and had hoped to open a restaurant. The detail offered a glimpse of Christopher beyond the police investigation as relatives mourned a young man who lived only a few blocks from where he was killed.
Police said two men left the scene after the stabbing and fled north on Albany Avenue in a black sedan. One was described as wearing a white tank top and blue jeans. Authorities had not released a description of the second man or publicly identified either person as of Sunday.
A nearby resident told CBS News New York that he heard a confrontation, including screaming, before police arrived. The witness could not establish what started the encounter, and police have not said whether Christopher knew the men they are seeking. Authorities have released no confirmed explanation for why he was targeted.
Christopher’s death has also drawn attention in Jamaica because of his father’s career in dancehall music. Powerman, whose given name is Michael Davey, has performed for decades, but the police investigation in Brooklyn remained centered on identifying the people who fled after his son’s death rather than his family’s public profile.
The case remained unsolved Sunday. Police were still searching for the two men and had not announced arrests or a motive, leaving Christopher Davey’s family waiting for answers about an attack that began during an ordinary trip to a neighborhood laundromat.
