Whitehouse High School Graduate Remembered 35 Years After Tragic USS Iowa Explosion

WHITEHOUSE, Texas – The Whitehouse City Council recently paid tribute to hometown hero Tyrone Foley, who tragically lost his life in the USS Iowa explosion 35 years ago off the coast of Puerto Rico.

During a council meeting, a proclamation was approved naming April 19, 2024, as “Tyrone Dwayne Foley Day” in honor of the 1980 Whitehouse High School graduate who was among the 47 sailors who perished in the ship’s explosion.

Foley was remembered for his exceptional achievements both academically and athletically, earning recognition for his skills as a wide receiver on the school’s football team. Additionally, he was an active member of the Smith Temple Church of God in Christ, where he showcased his musical talents.

Mayor James Wansley highlighted Foley’s legacy of courage, integrity, and selflessness, emphasizing how his passing was not only felt by his loved ones but also the entire community.

The city council unanimously voted to officially declare April 19, 2024, as “Tyrone Dwayne Foley Day,” acknowledging Foley’s lasting impact and contributions.

During the meeting, Kilgore City Councilman Victor Boyd, a former shipmate of Foley’s, shared heartfelt memories of their friendship in the Navy and their shared experiences onboard the USS Iowa.

Boyd emphasized the importance of honoring the memory of those lost in the USS Iowa explosion, particularly the “Iowa 47,” encouraging the community to remember their sacrifice and bravery.

As the 35th anniversary of the tragedy approached, Boyd sought to commemorate Foley’s life in a meaningful way, leading to the issuance of the proclamation by Mayor Wansley.

The proclamation serves as a lasting tribute to Tyrone Foley’s legacy, ensuring that his memory lives on in the hearts of the Whitehouse community and beyond.
